How do bakers survive winter mornings?
Cake Zine asked working bakers about their 2am, 3am, 4am routines - the small rituals that make getting out of bed in total darkness slightly more bearable. The answers are honest, specific, and worth reading.
One baker, Dallas King, mentioned getting dressed in the dark so he doesn’t wake his partner. It reminded us of something two customers once told us. The first said that by feeling for the hanging loop positioned on the left side of the waistband, he could put Horace underwear on in the dark. The second sent us this whatsapp: “I can tell them by feel... in the dark - that’s amazing!”
Funny how details can reveal themselves in unexpected ways. We hadn’t thought about early risers when we designed our underwear, but maybe we should.
Ten years since David Bowie died, Seu Jorge released a live performance of his Bowie covers from The Life Aquatic.
The setting is minimal - Jorge alone on the São Paulo coast, acoustic guitar, no audience. It was recorded during COVID lockdown in 2020 and only released last month. At one point, paddle boarders come ashore and sit down to listen (we have no idea if it was planned or not but it adds a lovely dimension).
We were always a big fan of his Portuguese interpretations of Bowie’s songs from the film, so it was nice to revisit them this week.
This week we learnt a new word: wordlessness.
Movement practitioner Ido Portal appeared on the Huberman Lab podcast (originally recorded in 2022, now available as a shorter Essentials episode) talking about non-verbal experiences. The idea stuck with us - wordlessness as a way to tune into what your body is actually doing, to step away from mental noise.
For example Huberman noticed himself moving up and down stairs more playfully. Portal shared his approach from Hong Kong: silently walking crowded streets for two hours trying to avoid touching anyone. Fully involved, fully present.
The practice isn’t about dedicated sessions. It’s about bringing attention to the movement you’re already doing. Walking. Sitting. Climbing stairs.
Maybe wordlessness extends beyond movement too.
The best discoveries come from friends, not algorithms. Forward or share if you think of someone who might enjoy this.
